The most expensive thing you can move is something you don't want. Before packing, walk each room and pull out what's going to donation, resale, or recycling. Every box you don't pack is a box you don't unpack.
Pack by room and by category, never by whatever fits. A box labeled 'Kitchen: baking' gets unpacked into the right cabinet in minutes. A box labeled 'misc' sits in the garage for a year.
Label two sides and the top with the destination room and the contents, and number the boxes so you know nothing went missing. Pack a separate first-night box for each person with sheets, toiletries, chargers, and a change of clothes.
On the other end, unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first. Once you can cook and sleep, everything else feels manageable. Our Packing Course walks through this whole system step by step for anyone who wants to pack on their own.
